During his trial, Ramirez attracted attention, gaining fans who wrote him letters and visited him at the jail he was being held at. One woman, Doreen Lioy, wrote Ramirez almost 75 letters during his imprisonment. They fell in love with each other, and he proposed to her in 1988. They were later married at California’s San Quentin State Prison in 1996.
